I know this post is 3 months old, but since I just read it, please allow me to submit a comment that is at once self-evident and jingoistic:

You are SERIOUSLY missing the boat on New England. Go there as soon as possible... fall is, I'm sure you've heard, the ideal time. Late Sept-early Oct. Make it happen, Allison. It's well worth the pain in the butt to get there, and easy to knock off at least passing through each of the 6 states all in one day.

When the time comes, I'll be happy to provide you with a list of must-sees. :)

north dakota is skipable. let me know when you're headed to minnesota - i'll give you some travel tips (like, don't go in january, and other such useful information).
